Why Supplication Matters for Travel

In the Sunnah, we find a strong hadith underlining the special status of a traveller's supplication:

ثَلاَثُ دَعَوَاتٍ مُسْتَجَابَاتٌ: دَعْوَةُ الْمَظْلُومِ، وَدَعْوَةُ الْمُسَافِرِ، وَدَعْوَةُ الْوَالِدِ عَلَى وَلَدِهِ

“Three supplications are answered: the supplication of the oppressed person, the supplication of the traveller and the supplication of a parent over his child.”

اَسْبَغَ الْحَمْدَ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا اِلٰى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِي سَفَرِنَا هٰذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوىٰ وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضٰى، اَللّٰهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هٰذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ، اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَسُوءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَالْأَهْلِ

“Glory be to Him Who has made this transport subservient to us, and we ourselves could not have made it. And to our Lord is the final return. O Allah, we ask You in this our journey for righteousness and piety and for such deeds as are pleasing to You. O Allah, make easy for us this journey of ours and make its distance short. O Allah, You are our Companion in travel and the Guardian of our family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardships of travel, from the distress of returning, and from an ill-fated outcome in wealth and family.”

That includes many dimensions: being grateful for the capability to travel, asking for piety and good deeds, seeking ease, acknowledging Allah's companionship, and seeking refuge from specific dangers.

Another hadith related to travel reiterates this protection as follows:

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وَكَآبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ، وَدَعْوَةِ الْمَظْلُومِ، وَسُوءِ الْمَنظَرِ فِي الْأَهْلِ وَالْمَالِ

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travelling, the gloom on returning, the supplication of the oppressed, and a bad fate in respect of the family or property."

·         Before leaving the house: Make intention for travel and say

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ

“In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and no power and no strength except with Allah.”) - this is recommended when going outside.” Islam-QA

·         As you embark (get into the vehicle, board the transport): say above main travel dua. It sets the tone: asking for piety, ease and protection.

·         During travel: Remember Allah often, glorify Him, seek protection, and be aware of the purpose. Consider your journey as an act of worship.

·         On arrival: It is also advisable to make dua for arriving safely:

اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمٰوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الأَرَاضِيْنَ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَقْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الشَّيَاطِينِ وَمَا أَضْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَيْنَ، أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا، وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيهَا، وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا، وَشَرِّ مَا فِيهَا

Common Mis-understandings and Clarifications

There are a few things to keep in mind so that this practice stays meaningful:
